End of the Map: South America’s Final Wild Road

The Pan-American Highway disappears into the jungle between Panama and Colombia, forcing all overlanders to pause. From there, End of the Map begins—across the sea and into the soul of South America.

We ferried into Cartagena, where Spanish colonial walls glow gold at sunset. From there, we entered Colombia’s coffee region—the green valleys of Salento and the towering wax palms of Cocora Valley. After days of dirt and switchbacks, we crossed into Ecuador.

Ecuador’s Avenue of the Volcanoes greeted us with fire and snow. Cotopaxi erupted in the distance as we camped at the foot of the mountain, and we stood on the equator, half in each hemisphere.

In Peru, the Sacred Valley opened before us. We visited Machu Picchu at sunrise, hiked around the colorful slopes of Rainbow Mountain, and drove deep into the desert to witness the Nazca Lines from above.

Bolivia brought the white infinity of Salar de Uyuni. Here, time bends and perspective warps. We crossed salt and silence to reach the high-altitude deserts of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve.

Then into Argentina—where the pampas stretch endlessly, the skies go lavender at dusk, and steak is a religion. We drove Ruta 40 to El Chaltén, basecamp for the Fitz Roy range, before crossing into Chile to experience the spires and lakes of Torres del Paine.

The road ends in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego. Snow meets sea. Roads fade into wind. And all that’s left is silence, memory, and the map’s final edge.
